Makeup tips for a brighter 2017 January 11, 2017

Have you heard the news?  It’s supposed to be warming up within the next week! You ditch your winter jacket and gloves, so why not change up your beauty look as well? Here are some fresh looks we love for the new year.

Trade your holiday cranberry pout for a rose-y red

The weather is warming up, and as much as we love that classic red lip, we’re really digging this warm pink-toned look.  This one is also fun because there are so many variations of this colour- trade the rose hue for something a bit more berry in the evening, or something glossy during the day- it’s super versatile and always looks fresh and put together.

Get this look- the Butter London Loved Up Moisture Matte Lipstick OR Flirt Plush Rush Lip Gloss match Margot’s lip perfectly.  The Ilia Jump Lip Conditioner is great for a subtle kick of colour during the day!

Add a touch of blue

Remember when your grandmother used to wear that pastel blue eyeshadow when you were a kid?  This is different.  Adding a little bit of blue to your eyes adds a jolt of energy to your look, and exudes confidence and freshness!

Okay, we know- the look above might be a little out of your comfort zone.  But the cool thing about this trend is you can totally cater it to your personal style!  Swipe the RMS Inspire Eye Polish all over your lid for a super subtle blue tint, or simply line your eyes with the Butter London Inky Six Wink Eye Pencil for more concentrated (yet still sophisticated!) pop of colour.  If you’re feeling adventurous, try the new Butter London Inky Six Mascara- one coat provides a super subtle tint, and 2+ coats will give you a vibrant payoff!

Get real sophisticated with a super-neutral cheek

This is a very simple yet very effective look that will enhance the rest of your look and give you an effortless glow. Don’t be afraid of looking like a zombie- the warm tones in the blush will give you a bit of warmth!  This look is great paired with statement lips or liners.

Get the look- dab a bit of the RMS Spell Lip to Cheek to the apples of your cheeks, or dust a bit of the Butter London True to Form Palette onto the contours of your cheekbones for subtle structure!  Tip you can also use both of these products on the eyes for a simple everyday look as well!

All of these looks are super simple and so fresh because they focus on one part of the face- this way, even with the fun colours you won’t look too overdone!  What’s one look you want to try in the new year?

Product Focus- Caudalie Beauty Elixir January 5, 2017

What is it?

The Beauty Elixir is a natural toning mist that’s our current face all-in-one product!

What does it do?

Currently our face all-in-one product, this mist adds an extra boost of hydration to the skin at any point during your day.  It also contains orange blossom water which softens the skin, grape extracts which promote radiance and clarifies, and rose extracts that tone and soothe the skin.  It tightens the appearance of pores and gives skin a natural, healthy glow!

How do I use it?

Since this product has a ton of uses, there are a few ways you can use it!

- spray onto a cotton pad and apply to a clean face to use as a hydrating toner

- spritz onto a clean face for a boost of hydration before moisturizing

- spritz over makeup as a setting spray

- use throughout the day for additional hydration, to soothe irritation, and for a quick pick-me-up!

Does it work with your skin type?

Lucky for us, this product is great for all skin types! Those with oily skin will love it because it’s a gentle non-oily hydration that will help balance the skin without adding a heavier moisturizer- you can actually use this in place of your moisturizer.  For combination-dry skin types, this will be a great addition to your routine.  Keep it in your purse during the day to use when your skin feels dehydrated or irritated, and use as a toner (this one won’t dry out your skin!)

If you feel like you’re missing a little hydration, the Beauty Elixir might be for you!  It’s super versatile, ideal for all skin types, and it comes in a travel size so you can try it out and see how it works for you!

Spotlight Holiday Eye Tutorial using Butter London! November 30, 2016

You’ve probably seen those gorgeous spotlight eyes all over Instagram this season, embellished with shimmering shadows and snazzy filters- don’t be intimidated! This look is totally achievable even for makeup beginners.  Here’s a super easy step-by-step tutorial that will give you a flawless holiday spotlight eye (using all of our new Butter London makeup, too)!

1.  Using a dark brown liner as a base for your darker shadow, apply to the inner and outer corners of your upper and lower eyelids, and blend right away with a small eyeshadow brush.  We like the Butter London Brown Sugar Liner because it’s super creamy and blendable!

2.  Set the liner with a shadow -we like the Leather shadow (a shimmery mocha shade) from the Pretty Proper ShadowClutch! Use the same small eyeshadow brush to blend slightly, but make sure there is still a blank space at the center of the upper and lower eyelids.

3.  Add a pop of colour! You can use any colour you like for this part, but we’re going to keep it festive with a green.  The citrus green from the Palm Paradise Duo is the perfect shade for this look because it’s super blendable and contrasts nicely with the mocha shadow!  Apply using a clean flat eyeshadow brush and pack on the colour the empty spaces on your lids.  Blend slightly with a small fluffy brush!

4.  We don’t want to go too dramatic with liner to keep the look from getting too overwhelming, so we’re heading straight to mascara.  The Iconoclast Mega Volume Mascara is great because it’s great for lengthening lashes (because the eye is a little smokey, we want to keep the lashes long and defined for a polished look)!

We think this is the perfect look for holiday parties- pair with a creamy lipstick of your choice and a cute clutch, and you’re good to go!

Grungy Gold Holiday Eye Tutorial! November 16, 2016

Want to mix things up a bit this holiday season?  Try a gold smoky eye- 50% grunge, 50% glam, using all clean beauty!   Keep reading for a super easy how-to for this look.

1. Prep the eye to ensure your look will last, and to intensity colour!  We like the RMS Un Cover Up- using a shade slightly lighter than your skin tone, apply a small amount all over your lid up to your brow bone, inner corner, and onto your lower lash line.  You don’t need much- just enough to create a clean base for your eyeshadow!

2. Using a flat eyeshadow brush, apply the Ilia Sway Multi Stick all over the lid and lower lash line.  Use a fluffy brush to quickly blend the edges, but don’t worry about making it perfect- this look is meant to be a little edgy!

3. Apply the Ilia In Between Days Silken Shadow right from the stick onto the center of your lid and the middle of your lower lashline, as well as your inner corner as a bit of a highlight.  This will give your eye more dimension by adding a bit of shimmer!  Blend the edges.

4. To keep with the grungy theme, we’re going to stay away from a crisp liner.  Use the Amaterasu Black Eye Pencil to line your upper and lower waterline, going all the way to the inner corner.  If you’re wearing this look at night, apply to your upper lashes and blend with a small shadow brush for a smoked out line!

5. Apply a coat of two of the Amaterasu Ultra Volume Mascara to upper and lower lashes for lots of volume and length!

Pair this look with fluffy brows and a classic 90′s lip, some velvet fringe, and throw on a holiday-rock cover!

Glam Cranberry Eyes Using Clean Beauty! November 16, 2016

The holidays are quickly approaching, and so are all of the dinners, gatherings, and parties that come with it!  We know that makeup can seriously take a toll on our skin… so why not get all dolled up with clean beauty, shame not included.  Here is a soft glam holiday look using all green products!

1. Prep the eye to ensure your look will last throughout the festivities!  We like the RMS Un Cover Up- using a shade slightly lighter than your skin tone (this will make the colours pop!) use your finger to dab a small amount all over your eyelids and up to your brow bone.  Blend what’s left over under your eye, we’ll be placing eye shadow there as well!

2. Using the Ilia Marsala Silken Eyeshadow, dab the colour directly from the stick onto the inner and outer corners of the eye.  Using a small eyeshadow brush, blend inwards and into the crease.  You can use a fluffier brush to blend the outer edges of the colour as well, for a feathered edge.  There should be a halo-effect, with the center of your lid untouched!  Apply to your lower lash line and smoke out with a small brush for a nice blended edge.  Continue this step until you’ve achieved the colour intensity you like!

3. In the center of your lid, apply the And She Was Silken Shadow- using your finger will create a subtle glow, while packing on the colour with a small brush will create that glam shimmery effect (we opt for this option.  It is the holidays after all!)  Blend this with the red shade- the result should be a smooth gradient.  Apply a bit to your inner corner and brow bone as well!

4. Time for liner!  Use the Geisha Ink Black Liquid Liner on your upper lash line and create a wing- you can keep it small or do a cat eye, totally up to you! If you want to be super glam, extend the liner all the way to your inner corner.  If you struggle with liquid liner, try the Beauty Blender Liner Designer.  Just hold the stencil where you’d like your line, apply the liner right on top, and voila!  A perfect line.

5. You’ll want big lashes for this look, so for tons of volume and length we love the Amaterasu Ultra Volume Mascara!  It has teeny fibers to give your lashes a little drama with one coat- super easy!

All that’s left is to put on your favourite lipstick and holiday outfit, and you’re all set!

Daily Microfoliant Product Review November 2, 2016

So this is probably one of the coolest skincare products I’ve ever tried.  It’s a rice-based exfoliating powder that activates when it comes in contact with water, great for all skin types.  This product is incredibly versatile- you can customize the level of exfoliation by changing the amount of water you add.

  • For more sensitive skin types or for someone with any skin type to use as a daily wash, add more water than powder to create a foaming cleanser
  • Add half a teaspoon of the powder to damp hands to create a (gently) abrasive exfoliant
  • Three of the main ingredients, licorice, rice, and grapefruit, make your skin shine bright like a diamond

Potential Downsides:

A.  Ratio Control – when you start off using this product, you need to experiment with the amount of water you add and how you mix the water and the rice powder to find the effect you’re looking for

B.  Shower Danger – if you cleanse in the shower, be sure to pour away from the water (I haven’t experienced what happens when water gets into the canister, but it can’t be good)

Final Judgement: The perfect cleanser has been hard to find for me because I want something different every time I wash my face.  Sometimes I want a gentle foam that makes my skin feel soft, sometimes I want a really gritty exfoliator that gets rid of dead skin cells. This cleanser allows for every type of clean feeling you’re looking for, and it works perfectly with all skin types.  It might take you a few uses to experiment and find what you like, but after that this cleanser is all you will ever need in life.

Skin Defense Booster Product Review! November 1, 2016

If you’re familiar with Dermalogica, this used to be called   The Solar Defence Booster.  In all of the time I’ve spent learning about Dermalogica, I’ve heard a total of three people say this product “does everything but the dishes.”  Let us for one second appreciate how statistically strange that is.

  • First and foremost, this product is a sunscreen with SPF50 broad-spectrum protection. It also includes a handful of antioxidants, which give you a second level of protection.
  • One of the first ingredients is water, is this product is also a toner!  I wouldn’t recommend using it primarily as a toner as it doesn’t apply well with a cotton pad, but it will be a step up for you if you’re not already using a toner as part of your routine.
  • The texture of this product is somewhere between a serum and a cream, but it is a serum because it contains two active ingredients: Avobenzone (which is common in sunscreens, used to absurd the full spectrum of UVA rays- which also makes this product anti-ageing), and Octinoxate (an organic compound found in human breast milk that acts as a UV filter).
  • All of Dermalogica’s skin boosters add hydration and enhance moisturizers, and the Skin Defense is no exception.  If your skin is particularly dry or dehydrated, you can use a hydrating toner before application or mix this booster with a moisturizer (which would be beneficial for every skin type in the colder months). Note: when mixed with a moisturizer the SPF in this product is decreased a bit to SPF40 from SPF50 when used alone.

Potential downsides:
A. The price- this booster retails for $69 dollars, which is pretty expensive for one 50ml product.
B. Contains lavender oil- lavender leaves contain camphor, which is known to be a skin irritant. It is also a pro-oxidant, which means there is an imbalance between free radicals and the body’s ability to protect against their harmful effects. However, there is a very small concentration of lavender oil in this product, so unless your skin is sensitive to lavender, the benefits really do outweigh the costs on  this one.

Final Judgement: Essentially, this product is a 5-in-1: sunscreen, anti-ageing, toner, serum, and moisturizer. If you’re looking for good quality skin are and don’t want to spend a ton on 6 different products, the Skin Defense is pretty perfect. Although the price might seem a bit high, the formula is very concentrated so it should last you at least a few months.  And I’m sure you could probably use it to wash your dishes if you ran out of soap or something.

Halloween How-To – Skeleton Makeup! October 26, 2016

1.  Start with foundation a few shades lighter than your skin tone.  Apply as normal.

2.  Using a cool-toned contour shade (we like the Tata Harper Very Bronzing colour pot) sketch out the hollows of your face.  Tip- use your finger to do this, it’s easier to feel your facial structure so you will get a more accurate sculpt! Apply under your cheekbones and extend downwards towards your chin, then apply along your jawline, temples, and eye sockets.  Once you have the placed the colour, feather the edges softly with your finger or a fluffy eyeshadow brush.  Optional- using a shade lighter than the foundation you used, apply to the high points of your face (like the tops of your cheekbones, chin, and forehead) as a highlight to give more dimension to your face- the RMS Un Cover Up in 000 is perfect for this!)

3.  Lightly brush a translucent powder all over your face to set the creams.  Be sure to use a patting motion instead of swiping to avoid moving the creams around!

4.  Time for the eyes.  Apply RMS Seduce Eye Polish all over your eyelids, from your lash line to above your crease, and below your lower lashline as well.  This doesn’t have to be perfect, so you can use your finger to apply and then feather the edges.  Once you are happy with the darkness of the colour and the softness of your blend, use a dark brown or translucent powder to set.  Use a black eye pencil to line your upper and lower lashline and water lines (Tip- this doesn’t have to be perfect. The messier, the better!) We like the Amaterasu Black Eye Pencil because it’s the darkest black, and it’s 100% waterproof!

5.  Lashes! If you want something dramatic, we love the LUXE Bollywood Lash!  (Psst- if you’re stuck, we always do free lash applications in store!) If you prefer just a mascara, the Amaterasu Ultra Volume Mascara is the perfect buildable mascara- it has little fibres in it so you’ll get a dramatic lash without the falsies!

6.  Using the Amaterasu Black Eye Pencil, draw a thin line extending from either ride of your lips- this should curve slightly upwards, like a smile! Draw several vertical lines through the horizontal ones- don’t forget to do them over your lips too!

7.  Using the same pencil, outline the hole for the nose.  Start with a teardrop shape, with two “tails” at the top.  Make the outline as wobbly as you want, then fill in.  Clean up any mistakes with a bit of oil-based remover or some concealer!

Dress this look up however you want- try some cat ears, a skeleton onesie, a crown… a skeleton can be anything!

Happy Haunting!

How To – Easy Scarecrow Makeup! October 18, 2016

It’s time to get spooky!  Hallow’s Eve is in just under two weeks.  If you haven’t had the inspiration to think up a costume yet, we’ve got you covered!  Here is a simple scarecrow makeup you can achieve with just a few products.

1. Start with the basics- apply your favourite foundation.  Apply as normal, and set with a powder to ensure it stays in place all day and night.  Then fill in your brows- we like the Amaterasu Brow Pens because they’re super easy to use!

2. Use your finger to apply the RMS Lip2Cheek to the apples of your cheeks.  Draw out a circular shape, then pat the product to ensure it doesn’t slide outside of the line you drew.  To stick with the scarecrow theme, use the Curious Lip2Cheek for the perfect wearable orange.  Using a small powder or eyeshadow brush, gently pack the powder over the cream to ensure it doesn’t slide!

3. Time for lipstick.  Ilia’s Call Me Lipstick Crayon is the perfect petal-y pink that’s not too bright and not too toned-down.  Apply to lips and dab a dot on the tip of your nose, feathering the edges with your finger.

4. Using the Amaterasu Black Liquid Liner, draw a slight curve at both corners of your mouth following the curve of your lips.  Then draw small lines through the line, 1-2cm in length.  Do the same for your nose, starting with a teardrop shape.  Make sure to hold the pen on a slight angle, and use a light hand!

5. Use a setting spray.  The Era Spray On Primer makes all makeup water- and sweat-proof!  Hold arm’s length away from your face and spray liberally.

Finish the look off with some false lashes and a plaid shirt, and you’re good to go!
